A model of human xanthinuria type I
This canine condition is studied as a natural model of xanthinuria type I in people; it is not the same as a human xanthinuria type I diagnosis. Studying dogs can move medicine forward for everyone; the canine disease remains the subject.
In people, the disease is described as: A rare autosomal recessive disorder of purine metabolism characterized by the isolated deficiency of xanthine dehydrogenase, causing hyperxanthinemia with low or absent uric acid and xanthinuria, leading to urolithiasis, hematuria, renal colic and urinary tract infections, while some patients are asymptomatic and others suffer from kidney failure. Less common manifestations include arthropathy, myopathy and duodenal ulcer.
In humans it is also called: XAN1, isolated xanthine oxidase deficiency, type 1 xanthinuria, xanthinuria type 1, xanthinuria, type 1.
