Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-08-15
Sniff is built to respect your privacy. This page is short on purpose.
What we collect
- Server-side analytics (page URL, country, browser, screen size) via Plausible. No cookies, no personal identifiers, no third-party advertising trackers.
- Email addresses you give us (waitlist, Friday newsletter, adding a dog, signing in, optional Keepers contact, corrections). Used only for the purpose you provided them.
- Dog profile data you submit through the /add/ form: name, breed knowledge, sex, spay/neuter, weight, diet, health conditions, optional memorial notes, optional photos. Tied to the email you used.
- Optional logs you choose to add later (Pulse check-ins, dated notes, answers to questions about the dog). These stay on that dog's record and follow the same visibility rules.
- A sign-in cookie so you can come back without a password. The cookie is httpOnly and Secure. Magic-link tokens and login codes expire in 15 minutes. We store only their hash, never the raw value.
Where data lives
- Dog profiles, waitlist entries, accounts, sessions, and logs are stored in a Turso (libSQL) database operated by Sniff.
- Photos are stored in a Cloudflare R2 bucket served via cdn.sniff.world.
- Transactional emails (welcome message, sign-in link, waitlist or newsletter confirmation) are sent through Resend. Resend is the send pipe, not a contact list. We do not sync a marketing audience from code.
- None of this data is sold, rented, or shared with advertising networks.
What is public vs. private on your dog's page
- You choose. A page can be public, name-hidden, or star-only. Each field (name, photos, story, breed, body facts, health, location) has its own setting.
- Health defaults to private even on a public page.
- Your email is never shown on a public page. It is the key that lets you sign in and find your dog.
- Star-only shows a stranger nothing. The science contribution (a star in the atlas) can still appear without a name or a photo.
What we don't collect
- Your legal name, home address, or phone number
- Behavioral targeting cookies
- Third-party advertising trackers (Google Ads, Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, etc.)
- Any data from children under 13 (knowingly)
- Owner income, job, age, or other person-demographics. Questions are about the dog.
Email, specifically
- Founder / DNA waitlist: rare, when something real happens. Not marketing.
- Friday newsletter (the footer form): one Friday email when there is something worth sending. Atlas updates, findings, recalls. No ads.
- Adding a dog: a welcome message with the dog's links. After that, maybe one email a year, and only if there is something worth it.
- Signing in: a one-time code and link, then nothing else from that path.
To leave the waitlist or the Friday list, open the signed leave link in the confirmation email, or go to /unsubscribe/. Reply remove still works, and so does emailing [email protected].
Aggregated research use
Sniff exists to make the picture of dogs sharper. Aggregated, de-identified statistics derived from submitted dog profiles (breed distribution, condition prevalence within a genetic neighborhood, etc.) may be published in research reports, surfaced on the site, or shared with academic collaborators. Aggregated means: no email addresses, no individual dog records, no way to reverse-engineer your dog's specifics from the published numbers.
Outbound links
Sniff currently runs no affiliate program. Outbound links to retailers, research databases, and source publications redirect you to the destination, where that destination's privacy policy applies. Sniff does not place tracking parameters on outbound links and receives no commission. If affiliate partnerships are ever added, the change and its terms will be disclosed before any commission-bearing link goes live.
Your rights (GDPR / CCPA)
If you're in the EU/UK/California, you have the right to request what data we hold on you, correct it, or delete it. To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected] from the address associated with your submission. We respond within 14 days.
Deletion specifically
Signed in, you can export a dog's full record and remove that dog yourself: the page, the photos, the logs, and the atlas placement. Type the dog's name to confirm. We never take a dog down. You always can.
Removing one dog does not remove your waitlist or newsletter row, or your sign-in account. Signed in, you can remove the whole account from /account/: every dog you own, the list row, sessions, and the sign-in. Type the account email to confirm. List-only leave is /unsubscribe/. Email [email protected] if you want us to do it. A request we handle by hand is completed within 14 days. Aggregated statistics that already incorporated your dog's data cannot be retroactively recalculated, but no individual identifiers persist in those aggregates.
Children
Sniff is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such data, email [email protected] and we will delete it.
Changes
We will flag material privacy changes on the homepage for 30 days. If a change materially expands what we collect or what we do with it, we will email everyone who has submitted a dog or joined the waitlist.
